Coenzyme Q-10
Coenzyme Q-10 or CoQ-10 is a vitamin like substance synthesized in your body from dietary sources. It is an essential part of energy production in each cell of your body. The role of CoQ-10 is similar to the role of your car’s spark plugs. Just like a car goes nowhere without that initial spark, your body can’t function without CoQ-10.
Because the heart is one of the most metabolically active body tissues, CoQ-10 deficiency has a major effect and can lead to heart failure. Beneficial results of using CoQ-10 to treat cardiovascular disease have been clearly documented in human trials. Biopsy results in cardiac patients show a CoQ-10 deficiency in about 2/3 of the cases. Correcting this deficiency has produced impressive results.
Some conditions proven to benefit from CoQ-10 supplementation:
o Congestive Heart Failure
o High Blood Pressure
o Cardiomyopathy
o Mitral Valve Prolapse
o Coronary Bypass Surgery
o Angina
o Diabetes
o Cancer
o Muscular Dystrophy
Common doses in most studies were 50-150 mg daily. Some nutritionally oriented physicians will recommend 300-500 mg per day for patients with severe hear conditions.
There are no known adverse reactions between CoQ-10 and any drug, however many cholesterol lowering drugs interfere with Co-10 production. Supplemental CoQ-10 is needed to prevent depleting body tissues when using these drugs.
